The School Education Department of Telangana has begun implementation of the biometric attendance system in government schools on a pilot basis and succeeded in ensuring good attendance of both teachers and students as well as preventing misuse of government schemes.
The biometric attendance is already being implemented in over 1,000 government schools. The equipment will be installed in the remaining schools in a phased manner within a couple of months. The attendance of staff and students has improved considerably and we are confident that it would increase further this academic year,” an official of the School Education Department in TS told Telangana Today. The government released Rs 4.4 crore for installing the biometric equipment last year, but the project got delayed due to reorganisation of the districts and also procedural delays, he added. The TS government is keen on completing the installation before August 31.
The TS School Education Department implemented the project in January this year. Satisfied with its success, the officials will be implementing the Aadhar-based biometric attendance system in more than 7,000 government schools across Telangana, including Model Schools, Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya and other government schools in a phased manner. More than 137 government offices are also using the biometric attendance system in TS and ever since the attendance, timings have improved considerably.

Using AFR technique, a person can mark his/her attendance by standing before the camera installed at the entrance of the classrooms for facial recognition which would automatically mark the attendance along with the time. The cameras would be attached to the server and all information gathered would be collected and made available for higher authorities to check the number of students present in the school on any given day.

The TS government opted for the new technology to do away with manual attendance marking system of registers as there is a scope for error and manipulation. The officials said that the biometric system has reduced bogus attendance marking and also effective implementation of the government schemes like Midday Meals in government schools.
